THE FACTS: BOCA’S BLOATED $̶𝟣̶𝟫̶𝟢̶𝖬̶ 120M POLICE STATION PLAN
The facts are clear when looking at Boca’s proposed $190M $120M police station.
✅ FACT: Boca’s price tag is way out of line with the comps.
When you start at $190M and go down to $120M, it seems like Boca’s now getting a great deal. However when looking at comparative stations currently being built in Florida, the math simply doesn’t add up to get you to this extraordinary cost. Bradenton, a city with 60,000 people, is currently underway building a $35 Million police station. Hollywood, a city with 159,000 people, is building an $84 Million station. Boca's population is in the middle at 104,000. Based on the comps, other cities have shown that Boca can do it for around $60M.
✅ FACT: Prices will only go up.
$190M $120M is just the starting point and will not be what we end up paying. City staff presented a prolonged timeline in which construction won't begin for 3 years, starting in 2029, with the project not being complete until the 2030’s. The proposed timeline mirrors that of Ft. Lauderdale, in which residents have been entangled in a 7+ year construction process that ballooned the price from $100M to $150M causing serious issues for the city. By the time Boca finishes this project the price could be back in the $190M range.
✅ FACT: 4 out of 5 council members are supporting this bloated plan, except Pearlman.
Despite voters making their voices heard loud and clear a short few months ago when they turned it down, 4 out of 5 council members—except Save Boca founder Jon Pearlman--are still pushing a bloated plan onto residents. Waiting another year for voters to turn it down again will only waste time as prices continue to go up. Pearlman has presented evidence that Boca can build a more fiscally responsible station and could build the station in a shorter time frame to prevent cost escalation.
